Build God Then We’ll Talk

It’s these substandard motels on the (lalalalala) corner of 4th and Fremont Street.
Appealing only because they are just that un-appealing
Any practiced catholic would cross themselves upon entering.
The rooms have a hint of asbestos and maybe just a dash of formaldehyde,
And the habit of decomposing right before your very (lalalala) eyes.

Along with the people inside
What a wonderful caricature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy

Tonight tenants range from: a lawyer and a virgin
Accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie
She’s getting a job at the firm come Monday.
The Mrs. will stay with the cheating attorney
moonlighting aside, she really needs his money.
Oh, wonderful caricature of intimacy.

Yeah (Yeah)

And not to mention, the constable, and his proposition, for that “virgin”
Yes, the one the lawyer met with on “strictly business”
as he said to the Mrs. Well, only hours before,
after he had left, she was fixing her face in a compact.
There was a terrible crash (There was a terrible crash)
Between her and the badge
She spilled her purse and her bag, and held a “purse” of a different kind.

Along with the people inside
What a wonderful caricature of intimacy
Inside, what a wonderful caricature of intimacy

There are no raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses.
It’s sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

Raindrops on roses and girls in white dresses
It’s sleeping with roaches and taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

Raindrops on roses and the girls in white dresses
And sleeping with the roaches and they taking best guesses
At the shade of the sheets and before all the stains
And a few more of your least favorite things.

In my opinion, the lyrics mean something like this:
The motel, which would be described as dirty and gross. No matter how gross they are, they’re there when you need them (dirty deeds haven haa). So, anybody who is against sin would pray to God the moment they enter. Asbestos is a type of fiber, and it makes things fireproof. (not sure how it pertains though)Formaldehyde is a type of disinfectant and preservative. Since it’s made in various plastics that could symbolize the “wonderful caricature of intimacy” *note sarcasm*
So adding the type of people who go in to these motels, he’s using dark humor by saying it’s a wonderful example of romance or intimacy.
The lawyer and the virgin are pretty straightforward. The girl needed money and a job, he was going to give it to her if she had sex with him. The lawyer’s wife knew this was going on, but she needed the money that he was bringing in so she was going to stay with him. So turns out they had a not so wonderful caricature of intimacy as well.
So after the lawyer left, this “virgin” was probably leaving and fixing her makeup and what not in the mirror and ran into the police. Between the two, she dropped her stuff but held the money she received from the lawyer (“purse of a different kind” being the sum of money she received) So instead of bringing her in he said that if she did something unmentionable with him he’d drop the charges. Needless to say, she probably slept with the constable.
“raindrops on roses” in my opinion is legitimate love and the “girls in white dresses” means pure woman. He’s saying that instead of that we have disgusting men and the woman who sleep with them. I think it says “chances” instead of “guesses” but i could be wrong, regardless i think it means hoping for the best out of the worst. I also think he says “so tear off the sheets, and before all the stains, add a few more of your least favorite things” though i am probably wrong. However, i think the message is pretty straight forward.
I could be totally off base here, but it’s just my opinion. I’ve loved PATD for years, it’s a shame they broke up. I wish Ryan’s lyrics stayed as theatrical and symbolic as he made them in “a fever you can’t sweat out”. Pure poetry, stuff like that is hard to find these days ): However, they’ve always been my heroes, and probably always will. (:
